Every semester the Media Arts Department at Pierce College recognizes the outstanding work of its student journalists with awards for excellence at a dinner designed to highlight their hard work.
Friday, Dec. 7 the department honored the dedication shown by the student radio hosts, photographers and journalists with the series of awards listed below.
MAGAZINE AWARDS
Comments by the judge:
Each year judging the best of The Bull is more difficult because of the quality of the work continues to get better. There is a thin line between the top selections and those that are not selected.
I do not use the word winners because when students produce a magazine that is as well designed, well planned, and well executed as this one everyone wins, especially the audience.
The staff did an excellent job of mixing fashions and social concerns in one package, while also introducing some fascinating people with stories to tell.
Congratulations to all.

Comments by the judge:
Honorable Mentions (easily worth our applause):
HM Blake Williams In the in-between.
HM Sarah Rosenberg Curve Fashion.
T-2nd Belea Hernandez Saving the world one T-shirt at a time.
Comments by the judge:
“A T-shirt is a T-shirt until you give it life.” Belea helps us learn what that really means in this piece about young entrepreneurs who believe in sharing their success.
T-2nd Danielle Padilla Fashion with a purpose.
Comments by the judge:
Danielle beautifully captures the story of Karen and Will and their decision to put recycled plastic into the fabric of their clothes.
1st Natalie Miranda Stringing it all together.
Comments by the judge:
Pamela Adewoyin realizes she has a gift and Natalie takes us on her journey as she discovers how to use it. And she also captures the essence of her subject in the beautiful pictures accompanying the story.

Comments by the judge:

First place goes to the front page of the fire issue. The simple design, a major departure from your normal front page, shows the importance of the event and sets an appropriate tone for the issue.

HM Alexis Canelo An un-canny professor
HM Sofi Matzaganian Music speaks to her
3rd Alexis Canelo A cat, a lamb and a new path
Comments by the judge:
Judge’s note: Nice job using a dead cat as a vehicle into the story about how Natalie Albizo landed in the vet program at Pierce. It captures how much she loves the studying and work that she’s doing. A little more attention to the structure/organization of this story would make it a top winner.
2nd Blake Williams Learning can be a messy experience
Comments by the judge:
Judge’s note: Cow poop! Enjoyed how this piece highlighted Travis Orloff’s own struggles to get through his PhD, and his love for working within an educational environment.
1st Christopher Torres Kicking it into high gear
Comments by the judge:
Judge’s note: The lede on this piece stands out because it’s short, punchy, and capped off with an effective nut graph quote. That serves as the all-important gateway into the rest of the story for the reader. Overall, the piece is well organized and is an appropriate length for the subject matter.
