Pierce Media Arts students win 12 awards at journalism conference

Pierce College’s Roundup newspaper, The Bull Magazine, and KPCRadio.com –the publications of the Pierce Media Arts Department–earned 12 awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ 2015 State Convention, held April 9-11 in Sacramento, including Online General Excellence for the Roundup.

Calvin Alagot took second place for his cover (above) of The Bull of Fall/Winter 2014, and the staff for that issue won fourth place for its layout and design. For magazine writing, Lynn Levitt’s profile of a Holocaust survivor received an honorable mention.

The previous Bull issue (Spring/Summer 2014) earned an honorable mention for an anonymously penned opinion piece.

Photojournalists Nicolas Heredia came in second for an online photo essay, and Mohammad Djauhari grabbed  fourth place for his work. Heredia added two more awards to his haul for his work on The Roundup. He won fourth place for feature photo and for sports feature photo.

Djauhari, teaming with Megan Moureaux, also earned a second place video journalism award for a profile of two Pierce football players.

Seth Perlstein took third place for a webcast and Vanessa Arredondo won third place for an opinion piece.
