Pierce journalism students brought home 11 awards in eight different categories Saturday night while both campus publications were honored for excellence at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) annual conference.
The popular event attracted community colleges from across Southern California and boasted mail-in and on-the-spot competitions in a range of categories including writing, design and photography.

Three General Excellence awards were among 23 honors snagged by Pierce journalists at the recent Journalism Association of Community Colleges conference – an event coincidentally keynoted by a 1975 Roundup editor in chief, Steve LeVine.
The conference is hosted annually by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC), alternating between Sacramento and Burbank. Thirteen Pierce students attended, competing in 15 events.

Seniors from Los Angeles high schools got a first-hand look at what happens at a college newsroom and radio station Friday.
More than 500 students from 11 LAUSD schools visited Pierce College for "Explore Pierce." Groups of students stopped by the newsroom where editors of the Roundup and Bull Magazine shared their stories. The high school students also got a hands-on experience with the microphones and headsets in the KPCRadio.com station.

This semester's film series will kick off Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. with a screen of "Sunset Boulevard" in the Great Hall.
The film series, organized by the Pierce College Media Arts Department and the Film Club, features three films, each followed by a panel discussion with students, professors and industry professionals. This semester's theme is Los Angeles.

Scott Bishoff, a FOX film executive who has 18 years of experience in media planning and buying, will speak at Pierce College on Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall.
Bishoff is the vice president of media planning at FOX, where he oversees media for all theatrical films. He has experience in entertainment and big-brand marketing. He previously worked for Universal Pictures, Activision, Pepsi and PlayStation.

A filmmaker will discuss his documentary, "Friday the 13th Part 3: The Memoriam Documentary" at Pierce College.
The event, which will take place Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall, is the first in the Media Arts Department's Spring 2018 Film Series, sponsored by Pierce College ASO.
Those in attendance will watch the 40-minute documentary about the classic horror movie. The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the director.

Pierce College adjunct journalism instructor David Blumenkrantz will have photographs featured at an exhibit focusing on the reality of street life in Los Angeles.
The exhibit will be open to the public today through Jan. 27 at the San Fernando Valley Arts & Cultural Center, 18312 Oxnard St. in Tarzana.
An artists' reception will take place Friday, Jan. 12 from 5-7 p.m.

Veteran Hollywood agent and producer Adam Krentzman will speak at Pierce College this month as part of the Media Arts Department's Speaker Series.
The free event will take place Thursday, Nov. 16 from 7-10 p.m. in the Great Hall. Refreshments will be included.
Krentzman was an agent with the Creative Arts Agency for 18 years. He represented some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Michael Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer, Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Mann and Bill Condon.
He has also worked as producer on several movies. His next film, "The Domestics," is scheduled for release next year.

The Pierce College Media Arts Department and Film Club will tackle the topic of ethics in journalism with its Film Series this semester.
The first event, a screening of "All the President's Men," will take place Monday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. "Nightcrawler" will be shown Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. The series will conclude with "Spotlight" on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m.
The series is called "Journalism: Ethics or Profit?" Each screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring professors and others who have worked in journalism. All screenings will take place in the Great Hall.

Cindy Dole has been in broadcast journalism for 30 years and said being a storyteller able to “speak with confidence,” think on your feet and connect with people meaningfully can allow an exciting career in journalism.
On Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Pierce College Great Hall, she will share her knowledge and experiences with students, staff, faculty and the community.
Her knowledge in all things media has led this award winning journalist to help teams in public relations, marketing and advertising as well as businesses wanting to form multimedia content to connect with their audience.
