The 2017-18 Media Arts Department Speaker Series will kick off Thursday, Sept. 14 with Pam Golum, president of the Lippin Group, talking about public relations.
Her firm is one of the top independent entertainment public relations and marketing firms in the world. She has managed projects for The Disney Channel and successful television series, such as the "Law & Order" franchise. Other clients include the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Emmy Awards.
The event will take place 7 p.m. at the Great Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. Food and drinks will be available.

Pierce College Go Days, an orientation for new students, will take place Aug. 22-23. All new students are expected to attend one of the two days.
Students will have an opportunity to meet faculty members and learn about financial aid, transfer and associate degree requirements, campus services and resources. The event runs 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite YouTubers make a career out of creating online videos?
The Pierce College Media Arts Department is hosting a panel of YouTube experts, including "Madi2theMax" creator and star Madison Brunoehler, at the Great Hall at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10.
Brunoehler has played more than 50 characters in over 240 videos on her YouTube channel. She is an actress, standup comedian, voice-over artist, cosplayer and video editor. She is co-host of Agents of MARVEL on TheStreamTV.

The Academy Award-winning film "Moonlight" will be shown at the Pierce College Great Hall on Thursday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m.
A panel discussion and question-and-answer session will follow the screening, and refreshments will be served.
The event is presented by the Media Arts and Philosophy departments.

The Pierce College Media Arts Department and Film Club will show three films which question the border between sanity and insanity.
The three-film screening series will feature panels and question-and-answer sessions. The events, sponsored by the ASO, will take place at the Great Hall.
"Taxi Driver" will be shown Monday, April 17 from 2-5 p.m. "American Psycho" is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3 from 7-10 p.m. "The Tenant" will close out the series Tuesday, May 16 from 7-10 p.m.
The series is called "What's In Sanity?"

Los Angeles Times photographer Luis Sinco is scheduled to speak at the Great Hall at Pierce College as part of the Media Arts Speaker Series.
Sinco has more than 25 years of professional photojournalism experience. He started at Copley Los Angeles Newspapers in 1987 and joined the Times in 1997. He was part of two Pulitzer Prize-winning teams with his coverage of the 2004 California wildfires and the Northridge earthquake. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the war in Iraq.

Five Pierce College Media Arts students advanced to the state round of the SkillsUSA competition.
Pierce College competed in Region 3, which includes colleges in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Taylor Arthur won gold for photography. Mohammad Djauhari and Tanya Castaneda won gold as a team for radio. The team of Christian Cheock and DeShawn Cavanaugh won silver for video production.
The event was held Saturday at Los Angeles Trade Technical College in downtown Los Angeles.
The state competition will take place April 20-23 in San Diego.
Scott Claus, an animator with more than 20 years in the business, will discuss in the Pierce College Great Hall, 4 p.m. on May 27, his career path, as well as his day-to-day work on blockbuster films for Disney and DreamWorks.

In time for the Halloween season, Pierce College Media Arts Department adjunct instructors - husband and wife Daria Matza and Mark Devendorf - will screen their documentary about giant pumpkins Oct. 30 in the college's Great Hall.
"Rise of the Giants," which chronicles the 2013 competition to grow the world's largest pumpkin, is the latest in more than a dozen films Matza and Devendorf have created. For this project they spent more than a year following a tight-knit community of growers who harvest gigantic pumpkins that can increase in weight up to 50 pounds in one day.
