Reporter/Editor to speak at Pierce

A reporter and editor will be the featured guest this month for the Media Arts Department Speaker Series at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2012 in the Great Hall at Pierce College. Walter Hammerwold currently works at the Daily News. He has covered the Olympics and four Rose Bowls. His work has appeared in multiple Southern California newspapers. Documentary film about veterans to be screened at Pierce

“The Welcome,” an award-winning documentary about the fear, anger and isolation of post-traumatic stress that affects veterans and their families after war, will be screened from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, March 21 in the Great Hall at Pierce College. Student photographs on display at Pierce

Photography submitted by Pierce College Media Arts students will be displayed in the 35th annual Photo Salon exhibit from Feb. 21 through March 23 in the Art Gallery on campus. Students, faculty and staff are invited to the opening ceremony Feb. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. The photographs chosen for the exhibit are hand-picked by faculty members from the photo department. L.A. Times ‘Homicide Report’ creator to speak at Pierce

The creator of the L.A. Times’ Homicide Report, a blog which seeks to document every murder victim in Los Angeles, will be the next person to participate in the Media Arts Speaker Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6. Jill Leovy is a veteran Times editor and reporter and started the Homicide Report in 2007 as a way to list all homicide victims reported by the Los Angeles County coroner. It is now one of the most popular items on the newspaper’s website and features interactive maps and a searchable database. Pierce College Media Arts Department students were recognized recently at a journalism conference with nearly 30 awards for their newspaper, magazine and broadcast work, including general excellence awards for their print and online publications. Writing, photojournalism, multimedia, social media and design awards were given to several Media Arts Department students during a journalism conference April 7, 2011 to April 10, 2011 in Sacramento.
