Pierce journalism students brought home 11 awards in eight different categories Saturday night while both campus publications were honored for excellence at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) annual conference.
The popular event attracted community colleges from across Southern California and boasted mail-in and on-the-spot competitions in a range of categories including writing, design and photography.

Pierce College Media Arts Department students took home medals from the SkillsUSA California State Championships on Sunday.
Joshua Manes and Cameron Kern won gold for Audio/Radio Production. Angel Arauz-Diaz and Neiman Lofton won gold for Digital Cinema Production. Shae Hammond won silver for Photography.
The gold medalists in each category qualify for the national championships in Louisville, Ky. in late June.
The state championship was held at the Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, California. The contestants competed against other community college students from around the state....

Los Angeles Pierce College photography student Taylor Arthur has been named the 2017 Photojournalist of the Year by the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles.
She received the award last weekend at a luncheon in Montebello. The award came with a $1,000 check and a Nikon camera and lens.
Arthur, who was joined by her family at the awards ceremony, knew she was a finalist but did not know she had won first place until she was called up on stage. This was her first time entering the contest, which judged photographers on multiple categories, such as news, sports and features.

Seniors from Los Angeles high schools got a first-hand look at what happens at a college newsroom and radio station Friday.
More than 500 students from 11 LAUSD schools visited Pierce College for "Explore Pierce." Groups of students stopped by the newsroom where editors of the Roundup and Bull Magazine shared their stories. The high school students also got a hands-on experience with the microphones and headsets in the KPCRadio.com station.

Students from the Pierce College newspaper and magazine won more than 20 awards over the weekend at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges state conference in Burbank.
The Roundup received an award for newspaper general excellence and online general excellence, and The Bull won for magazine general excellence.
Students from community colleges across the state competed in mail-in and on-the-spot contests. The mail-in contests were open to articles and photographs published in the last year.

A filmmaker will discuss his documentary, "Friday the 13th Part 3: The Memoriam Documentary" at Pierce College.
The event, which will take place Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall, is the first in the Media Arts Department's Spring 2018 Film Series, sponsored by Pierce College ASO.
Those in attendance will watch the 40-minute documentary about the classic horror movie. The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the director.

Pierce College is set to host the LA HI TECH Career and Internship Symposium on Wednesday, Nov. 8 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Great Hall.
