The assistant features digital editor for the Los Angeles News Group will be in the Great Hall discussing her role as a multimedia reporter at 7 p.m. Monday, April 22 as part of the Media Arts Department Speaker Series.

Mariecar Mendoza was recently named the assistant features digital editor. Before that, she was a general assignment multimedia reporter for the Los Angeles Daily News in Woodland Hills. In that role she covered local news, including the manhunt for former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.

Previously, she was a reporter for The Desert Sun in Palm Springs, where she covered crime and city hall as well as major desert events including the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.

Mendoza earned her degree in journalism from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
She is a 2007 Chips Quinn Scholar and has been an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association since 2006 serving as a mentor for Voices, the association’s annual student convention project.
Mendoza was elected to serve on the AAJA-LA board in 2012 and is currently serving on the board’s V3con Steering Committee, which is organizing the second annual V3con Digital Media Conference in June.

Mendoza will visit Pierce as part of the Pierce College Media Arts Department Speaker Series, a free program that welcomes esteemed speakers from the radio, film, journalism and website worlds.

The events are a semester-long effort funded by the Associated Students Organization. Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited. Faculty can receive Flex Credit for attending.

Refreshments will be served. Parking is available for $3 in Lot 1, near the Sheriff’s Station off Brahma Drive and Winnetka Avenue.
