In time for the Halloween season, Pierce College Media Arts Department adjunct instructors – husband and wife Daria Matza and Mark Devendorf – will screen their documentary about giant pumpkins Oct. 30 in the college’s Great Hall.
“Rise of the Giants,” which chronicles the 2013 competition to grow the world’s largest pumpkin, is the latest in more than a dozen films Matza and Devendorf have created. For this project they spent more than a year following a tight-knit community of growers who harvest gigantic pumpkins that can increase in weight up to 50 pounds in one day.
“It’s one of the fastest growing hobbies,” Matza said.
“Rise of the Giants” will screen as part of the Pierce College Media Arts Department Speaker Series, which brings professionals from cinema, multimedia, journalism, photography, broadcasting and public relations to speak to students and the community about their experiences.
The screening is at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall at Pierce College. Admission is free and food will be served.
