Film Festival to Showcase Student Work

Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010— Dramas, comedies, music videos, animation, documentaries and commercials will be showcased during Crossfade, a free student film festival hosted by Los Angeles Mission College and Pierce College from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11 at Laurel Canyon Stages in Arleta.

In addition to the film festival, Crossfade will also feature a vendor exhibition from noon to 2 p.m. with companies including Sony, Panasonic and Kino Flo. The groups will show off their equipment on an old sci-fi set so that students and the public receive hands-on experience.

Film festival entries from Mission College, Pierce College and some high school students will be judged by professionals in the industry. Alumni from the colleges will also showcase short films they have done. Material is suited for ages 13 and up, with some material that may be more mature in content shown later in the festival. The festival runs from 2:30 to 5 p.m.

This is the festival’s seventh year and the first time it is being hosted off-site. It began with a group of students showing films on the grass at Mission College. Eventually, faculty and the college’s Digital Artists Club got involved and by year four, a grant was received to fund the project.

“It has come a long way from its lowly start of people sitting on lawn chairs in the grass to exhibitors participating and students showcasing work in a real sound stage studio,” said Curtis Stage, vice chair of multimedia at Los Angeles Mission College. “It is such a great opportunity for our students to show off their tremendous talent to friends, family and the public on a large scale.”

Crossfade will also feature free food from Mission College’s Culinary Arts Program. Additional food for purchase will also be available.
