Pierce College Media Arts Department students were recognized recently at a journalism conference with nearly 30 awards for their newspaper, magazine and broadcast work, including general excellence awards for their print and online publications.
The Pierce College student newspaper website, www.theroundupnews.com and the student magazine, The Bull, won General Excellence awards at the two-day SoCal Journalism Association of Community Colleges conference at Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15, which included workshops and on-the-spot competitions. About 350 students and faculty from Southern California community colleges attended.
Three Media Arts Department faculty members (Jill Connelly, Jeff Favre and Stefanie Frith) took 19 journalism students from Pierce College to the conference.
Student awards were presented in two general areas: Mail-ins for work published during the 2010-11 academic year and on-the-spot recognition for material produced in individual timed competitions during the conference.
Three Pierce publications were recognized: the weekly Roundup newspaper, the semi-annual BULL magazine and theroundupnews.com.
Some top awards included: First place feature writing for Melody Soto, first place in sports action photo and sports feature photo for Joe Kukuckza, first place for magazine cover for Amber-Rose Kelly and Erin Stone and first place magazine illustration for the Bull Magazine staff.
“Our students are learning skills on the newspaper, magazine and radio station that are being asked for by employers,” Media Arts Chairwoman Jill Connelly said. “Attending conferences and participating in competitions helps them network and understand our industry.”
