Monday, Oct. 14, 2013— Media Arts Department students representing the newspaper and magazine at Pierce College took home 19 awards from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges Southern California conference in Fullerton, Calif. on Oct. 11 and 12.

There were 23 Media Arts Department students who participated in the two-day Journalism Association of Community Colleges SoCal Conference at Cal State Fullerton, which included workshops and on-the-spot competitions. Several Pierce students took home first place awards for their photography and articles.

Pierce professors Jill Connelly, Jeff Favre and Stefanie Frith from the Media Arts Department took the students to the event. Connelly, Favre and Frith are advisers to the student newspaper, The Roundup and were volunteers during the event, helping judge competitions and lead workshops. Two Pierce adjuncts, Gerard Burkhart and Rob O’Neil also volunteered during the event.

Student awards were presented in two general areas: Mail-ins for work published last year and on-the-spot recognition for material produced in individual timed competitions during the conference.

JACC is a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to community college journalism in California. It is run by an elected board of directors who represent both students and faculty from around the state.
