Pierce College Media Arts students were honored with awards at the department’s spring 2014 Banquet on Monday, June 9. Students and staff met at Maggiano’s for lunch and the presentation of departmental awards.
The awards are given every semester to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the students involved with The Roundup, The Bull, KPCRadio and in cinema and media arts classes. This year the department invited six judges to critique the students’ work in writing, photography, broadcasting and design. The judges were: Brian Vander Brug (staff photographer for the L.A. Times), Gregory Farve (retired editor of the Sacramento Bee), Philip George (a multimedia producer), James Hermon (FOX), Anibal Ortiz (with the Orange County Register) and Kent Pollack (retired editor of the Sacramento Bee).
This semester the department gave out 65 awards in four categories. The categories are: magazine, multimedia/cinema, newspaper and special awards.
The John Gallo Memorial Scholarship is a special award given to two photography students in honor of John Gallo, a former Pierce College professor. The award includes a scholarship worth $100, which is provided by John’s siblings in his memory. This years winners were Mohammad Djauhari and Nicolas Heredia.
“This is the first time I’ve ever won any awards and it all came at once. It was awesome,” Nicolas Heredia, award-winning photographer said. “Actually winning money towards something takes the cake.”
