Film series features characters who replace trauma with fantasy

The Pierce College Media Arts Department and the Film Club will use the film series dubbed “Coping Mechanisms” to examine how cinematic characters use fantasy to cope with their own traumatic or unpleasant realities. Light refreshments will be provided and after each film a small panel will help students discuss events in the movie. The first film “Big Fish” will be shown Monday, Oct. 29 from 1p.m. to 4p.m. followed by a panel featured Journalism Professor Jeff Favre.

Students honored for excellence

Pierce journalism students brought home 11 awards in eight different categories Saturday night while both campus publications were honored for excellence at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) annual conference. The popular event attracted community colleges from across Southern California and boasted mail-in and on-the-spot competitions in a range of categories including writing, design and photography.

Students from the Media Arts Department received their Associate of Arts degree from Los Angeles Pierce College at the end of the spring 2014 semester.

An Emmy award winning television editor whose work includes "Keeping Up With The Kardashians," "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," "The Bachelor" and "VH1's Behind The Music" will be the next person to participate in the Media Arts Speaker Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11.
