Four Pierce College Media Arts students have qualified for the national SkillsUSA competition after winning their categories at the state conference in San Diego this weekend.
Christian Cheock and DeShawn Cavanaugh won gold in television (video) production, and Mohammad Djauhari and Tanya Castaneda won gold for audio/radio production. Taylor Arthur won silver for photography. To advance to the state level, the students had to receive qualifying scores at a regional competition in Los Angeles.

Pierce College Media Arts students received recognition at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges state convention in Sacramento last weekend.
Two Pierce students received honorable mention in "on-the-spot" contests held at the convention — Victor Rodriguez for opinion writing and Sebastian Cornejo for news photo. In the mail-in competition, The Roundup newspaper and The Bull Magazine won for general excellence. David Hawkins received third place for magazine photo, Calvin B. Pierce College Media Arts students won a dozen awards this week for the student-run magazine and newspaper at the California College Media Awards contest.
The Bull Magazine staff won second place for best magazine website and honorable mention for best magazine. The Roundup staff won third place for best editorial. There were also nine individual awards, including Alan Castro winning first place for magazine photo.

Five Pierce College Media Arts students advanced to the state round of the SkillsUSA competition.
Pierce College competed in Region 3, which includes colleges in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Taylor Arthur won gold for photography. Mohammad Djauhari and Tanya Castaneda won gold as a team for radio. The team of Christian Cheock and DeShawn Cavanaugh won silver for video production.
The event was held Saturday at Los Angeles Trade Technical College in downtown Los Angeles.
The state competition will take place April 20-23 in San Diego.

The Pierce College Media Arts Department's two student publications won first-place awards in a national journalism competition.
The Bull won for best school magazine and The Roundup won for best school newspaper in the 2016 American Scholastic Press Association competitions.
A judge for the newspaper contest wrote about The Roundup: "You have an excellent school newspaper, which shows creativity and journalistic knowledge of your editors, reporters, writers, photographers, layout/graphics designers and advisor."

Triple crown honors went the Pierce College Media Arts Department at this year’s Journalism Association of Community Colleges SoCal conference, held at CSU Fullerton Oct. 17-18.
The Roundup weekly print newspaper, the semi-annual BULL magazine and the college’s Online Journalism operations earned General Excellence recognition—the conference’s highest honor.
The two-day event brought hundreds of community college students to compete and attend workshops. In addition to General Excellence honors, Pierce students won 22 individual awards.

The Roundup newspaper, the student-run campus publication for Pierce College, has won a first place award from the American Scholastic Press Association.
The American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA), which is open to campus newspapers across the country, wrote that the Roundup is an “excellent” school newspaper, “which shows the creativity and journalistic knowledge of your editors, reporters, writers, photographers, layout/graphics designers and advisor.”
